Open your scan
Drag and drop your files, a scan folder, or one ZIP here. You can also choose them below.
DICOM files, including files without an extension. Up to 600 files per selection.
Not sure which files to choose?
Choose the folder containing your scan images, or the ZIP supplied by your imaging center. You do not need to run the software on the disc. If folder selection is unavailable on your phone, use Choose files or ZIP.
This viewer supports grayscale, single-frame DICOM with uncompressed or JPEG Lossless images. Other formats are identified in the import results.
Why won't my scan disc just open?
Hospitals store scans as DICOM files, usually .dcm, often with no extension at all. Windows and macOS can't display them, and the viewer bundled on the disc tends to be outdated, Windows-only, or refuses to install.
DICOM images can also use compression that ordinary image software cannot read, even after you rename the file. This viewer handles grayscale, single-frame images in uncompressed and JPEG Lossless DICOM formats. If an image uses another format, the import results explain the limitation.
Your files are grouped into series, so you can browse one set of images at a time. The viewer uses the scan's position data to order the images when available, and shows how many files were opened from your selection.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open DICOM (.dcm) files?
Drop your files, a scan folder, or one ZIP into the viewer. You can also use Choose files or ZIP, or Choose a folder. Files without a .dcm extension are supported too. The images open locally in your browser, with no software to install and no account needed.
Is this really free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and no account is needed. The viewer runs entirely in your browser.
Is my scan uploaded anywhere?
Viewing does not upload your scan. The files are held temporarily in this browser tab and are not saved to your LabLumen account. Opening a different scan or closing the tab releases the viewer's files. If you choose Explain My Scan, you will go to a separate upload step for AI analysis. Nothing is transferred automatically.
Why won't my scan CD open on my computer?
Scan discs store images as DICOM files, often with a .dcm extension or no extension at all. Windows and macOS cannot display them natively, and the viewer software bundled on the disc is frequently outdated or Windows-only. Many hospital exports are also JPEG Lossless compressed, which ordinary image software cannot read. This viewer handles both uncompressed and JPEG Lossless DICOM.
Can it show a full study with several series?
You can open several series and switch between them. Images are ordered using the position information in the files, with image-number ordering when position information is missing. The viewer inspects up to 600 files per selection and tells you how many were opened or omitted. Multi-frame files, which contain several images in one file, are not supported yet and are clearly identified instead of showing an incomplete set of frames.
How do I zoom or move through the images?
Use Previous image, Next image, or the image slider. On a computer, you can scroll over the image or focus it and use the arrow keys. Zoom with the plus and minus buttons, or pinch on a touch screen, then drag to move around the enlarged image. Fit image restores the full image. Fullscreen gives you more space; use Exit fullscreen or Escape to return.
What if some files cannot be opened?
The import results explain which files were omitted and why. This viewer supports grayscale, single-frame DICOM with uncompressed or JPEG Lossless images. It does not currently support color DICOM, multi-frame files, or other compression formats. Choose a smaller scan folder if you reach a file or memory limit. For an unsupported format, ask your imaging center for a grayscale, single-frame DICOM export using uncompressed or JPEG Lossless images.
Does the viewer tell me what my scan shows?
The viewer displays your images without interpreting them. Explain My Scan opens LabLumen's separate AI analysis upload page, where you select your files and choose an analysis option using credits. Coverage depends on the option and supported files. The resulting explanation is informational, not a diagnosis or a substitute for your doctor or radiologist.
